Dordt College has trained a multitude of teaching professionals, respected nationally and internationally for their quality preparation and Christian commitment. Dordt was founded as a teachers college in 1955, and this program continues to reflect a Christian perspective.
Dordt faculty and students approach the teaching profession as a calling to help guide young people to a greater understanding of God’s world and living as His people. In the teacher education program and through the college’s Center for Educational Services, new ideas in curriculum and teaching methods are developed and critiqued in the light of biblical principles.
At Dordt you will get a firm foundation in the principles of Christian teaching, with a healthy balance of class work and practical experience. In our bachelor’s degree programs, you’ll have two field experiences early in the program, one of 20 hours, the other of 60 hours, spent in a local elementary, middle or high school. In your senior year, you’ll complete a 13-week student-teaching experience in a cooperating school. Student teaching assignments are usually in more than one grade level or discipline in order to broaden the teaching experience.
The Learning Resource Center in the college library offers future teachers curriculum resources, textbooks, idea books, children’s literature, computers, multi-media programs and equipment, and a wide range of educational software.
Dordt’s teacher education program offers a wide variety of endorsement options in which you select major programs to fit your interests and goals. In addition to the major, students may select other majors/minors that also provide teaching endorsements as defined by the State of Iowa licensure codes.
