The sports management emphasis combines our Health and Human Performance program with traditional business courses. If you love sports and have always wanted to work in athletics, this is the program for you.

What You'll Learn

While studying sports management, you’ll learn the foundations of business through your coursework and hands-on application. You’ll also learn about the human body and the behind-the-scenes of sports. You’ll take classes on business and the human body, and you’ll learn how to apply what you learn to sports management.

What You Can Do With A Sports Management Emphasis

Sports management includes a lot of different careers. Our job is to help you prepare to apply your unique skills and ideas in an effective way. By getting an emphasis in sports management, you’ll be ready to work as a marketer, designer, or an operations staffer. Or maybe you’ll want to develop a product or service and manage the business. The possibilities stretch as far as your imagination and vision.

Marketer

A marketer is a creative person that generates ideas to help a sports team achieve higher brand recognition and brand value.

Designer

A Designer creates graphics for sports teams that resonate with fans and the general public alike.

Operations Staffer

An Operations Staffer can be responsible for anything from facilitating player interviews with the media, to recording practice film, to managing a team's equipment.

Career Preparation

In addition to completing the general requirements for a business administration degree, students who choose the sports management emphasis will complete two business administration courses, one communication course, and four health and human performance courses.

  • Introduction to Health, Physical Education, and Sports Management: Introduces students to the areas of health, physical education, and sports management. Course content is geared towards developing the foundational body of knowledge, the historical background, and career opportunities in each of the areas. The student will also develop and articulate a Christian perspective on health, physical education, and sports management.
  • First Aid and Athletic Injuries: A study of methods used to prevent athletic injuries and instruction in administering first aid in emergencies.
  • Assessment in Physical Education and Health: A study of statistical procedures, the preparation and administration of physical fitness tests, health assessment procedures, and various athletic skills. A physical education and health grading system is formulated.
  • Human Resource Management: Introduces students to the role that Human Resource Management (HRM) plays in organizational settings. Course content is geared towards developing the foundational body of knowledge required of entry-level HRM practitioners and is organized around the four foundation areas of HRM expertise: staffing and recruitment, employee and organizational development, compensation and benefits administration, and labor relations.
  • Leading and Serving Others: Involves the study of human behavior and how individuals influence that behavior. This course will reflect a diversity of perspectives on leadership and motivation. Students will examine different models, skills, and styles of leadership, review common traits of effective leaders, and evaluate, from a Christian perspective, the ethical and moral issues facing leaders..
  • Project Management: This course is an introduction to the field of project management. The primary objective is to acquaint students with a broad basic overview of project management and the role of a project manager throughout the five primary processes of managing projects. The course will also cover common agile methodologies and principles because of how they relate to project management. The agile project management process encourages frequent inspection and adaptation, teamwork, accountability, self-organization, best practices that allows for rapid delivery and high quality, and a business approach that aligns development with customer needs and company goals..
  • Entrepreneurship/Small Business Management: A study of the importance of entrepreneurship in both the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors to the development of a society, emphasizing the different paths to business concepts, interactions with entrepreneurs, and the development of a business plan.
  • Organizational Behavior: An advanced study of the theory and practice of organizational behavior. Topics include personality, motivation, group leadership, organization/work design, and group/team dynamics. Specific emphasis is placed on the diagnosis of organizational dysfunction and the design and implementation of appropriate Human Resource Management-driven interventions.
  • Serving through Selling and Retailing: Using lectures, class discussion, and small group activities, you will learn about the exciting fields of Personal Selling and Retailing. The basic areas of retail management will be covered: buying, merchandising, retail promotion, store location, store layout, credit management, and inventory control. Emphasis is on practical application of retail management principles. Also includes a study of the discipline of personal selling, including both sales strategies and sales management. Emphasis is given to both personal as well as business and industry sales applications. Topics include sales training, sales preparation, prospecting methods, types of presentations, handling buyer questions, closing methods, post-sales service, and sales management. Both areas will be approached from the perspective of serving others through these disciplines.
  • Substance Abuse and Consumer Health: The first half of the course is devoted to introducing the student to the use, misuse, and abuse of drugs. Emphasis is placed on the psychological and physiological effects of drugs. The second half of the course will provide the student with basic health-related information that will aid the student in making sound decisions regarding personal health.
  • Personal and Public Health: This course examines the physical, mental, social, emotional, spiritual, and occupational dimensions of health. Emphasis is on the utilization of health information in making good health choices.
  • Nutrition: This course examines the physical, mental, social, emotional, spiritual, and occupational dimensions of health. Emphasis is on the utilization of health information in making good health choices.
  • Field Experience in Sports Management or Strength and Conditioning: Designed to give students the opportunity to do a practicum in a sports management setting. The student will work under the supervision of a professional sports management leader for three hours each week of the semester.
  • Sports Management Internship: Intended to provide the HHP major the opportunity to apply knowledge principles and skills gained from the classroom into a workplace environment. Prerequisite: completion of no less than seven courses in the major. See HHP internship coordinator for approval.
  • Small Group Communication: A study of the theory and practice of group problem-solving in cooperative face-to-face discussion; the development of awareness and understanding of group dynamics, and the presentation of panel, symposium, and dialogue.
  • Organizational Communication: The analysis of formal and informal communication in such organizations as corporations and institutions. Included will be considerations of communication problems related to grapevine, rumor, channels, perception, power, status, roles, structures, etc.
  • Sports Broadcasting: This course focuses on all aspects of Sports Broadcasting including sports reporting and anchoring. Students will learn how to properly shoot and edit sports video, how to provide quality play-by-play announcing, and how to properly prepare to call a game. Students will also learn to conduct in-depth interviews with players and coaches.
