Data Science

Are you interested in patterns and trends? As a data science major, you'll learn how to take a holistic view to data analysis, making sure that context drives analysis and interpretation.

Today, we produce more and more digital data, and there's a need for people who can get knowledge from it. Dordt will give you a worldview you can stand on as you face questions like "how do we use this data properly?".

As an emerging field, data science is everywhere, from determining what to recommend to online shoppers to predicting the weather for agricultural businesses. There's a huge need for people who have the analytical skills to look at data and find the trends and patterns—and with a degree from Dordt, you'll gain those skills.

Program Options

Data Science is an emerging field and your skills will be in high demand. At Dordt, you will gain the tools to work with datasets and manage data—and our core program will give you a strong Christian foundation to bring with you wherever you go. As a data science major, you'll take a mix of computer science, mathematics, and statistics courses.

Want hands-on learning experience? An integral part of our program is participating in ongoing research projects through on- and off-campus internships to gain practical experience to take with you to employers upon graduation.

Opportunities

Participate in active research alongside members of the faculty and present your work locally, regionally, and nationally. Our data science community is nurtured through numerous ways:

  • Ladies' lunch: Female faculty and students from the department join women from computer science monthly for a ladies' lunch. The cost of the lunch is funded through grants and the department in an effort to promote women in our STEM fields. The goal of the lunches is to connect female majors and minors to other women in the area for the purpose of supporting, encouraging, and networking.
  • Social events: We enjoy spending time together; sometimes this occurs by majors, such as the Actuarial Science Club, Math Club, or statistics gatherings. Other times we have events for math, statistics, and actuarial science together. Activities have included movies, nacho night, pizza parties, and Christmas gatherings.
  • Conference attendance: Students have opportunities to attend conferences with professors with some assisting in joint presentations. Conferences are encouraged to provide students experience with professional development opportunities.
