Perdue Farms Supports Construction of Dordt's Indoor Turf Facility

Dordt's Indoor Turf Facility construction is supported by Perdue Farms

Perdue Farms, through its charitable giving arm the Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue Foundation, has awarded Dordt University a $10,000 grant to help fund construction of a new multisport indoor turf facility that will benefit the local community. The donation is part of the company’s “Delivering Hope to Our Neighbors” initiative focused on improving quality of life and building strong communities.

“In a joint community effort, Dordt and the city of Sioux Center will construct a 100,000-square-foot indoor turf facility,” says Lyle Huisman, Dordt University director of development. “The indoor facility, which will be named the American State Bank Sports Complex, is slated to be completed in late 2022 and will provide year-round opportunities on a multi-functional, artificial turf field that will be used for youth, collegiate, and adult athletic activities.”

Project costs are estimated at approximately $8 million. The financial responsibilities for construction, maintenance, and operation will be shared by the university and Sioux Center, which anticipate a full schedule of collegiate and community events.

“As the Sioux Center community continues to grow in size and diversity, the indoor turf facility will provide ways for all community members to interact and use a common space,” Huisman says. “They will be able to meet, connect, and deepen relationships with year-round wellness, recreation, and sporting events for all age groups.”

Dordt University is a comprehensive university that enrolls more than 1,600 undergraduate and graduate students. Dordt offers 42 majors, 11 preprofessional programs, and three graduate programs.

“We are most grateful for this generous gift from Perdue Farms,” says Ross Douma, athletic director at Dordt. “This is an illustration of Perdue’s intentional strategy to invest in their communities. Perdue’s kindness brings forward the development of the American State Bank Sports Complex and helps make Sioux Center a destination location.”

“We are honored to be able to help make this project a reality,” says Gary Malenke, senior vice president of pork operations for Perdue Farms. “The athletic and recreational opportunities this facility will provide the community, including our associates and their families, are very exciting.”

Perdue Farms employs more than 445 associates at its operations in Sioux Center and Sioux City, Iowa, and partners with 223 hog farmers in the state. The company’s economic impact in Iowa is nearly $350 million.
