Sioux Center, home to Dordt University, named safest city in Iowa
Named Iowa’s safest city, Sioux Center offers Dordt University students a comfortable, welcoming, and supportive environment rooted in strong community values.
In response to growing demand for more robust, research-based reading instruction and strategies, Dordt University's Master of Education program has revised its Reading track.
To better align with the science of reading and current literacy research, Dordt University has revised the title and focus of its Master of Education (M.Ed.) Developmental Reading track. Now titled “Reading,” the updated track provides a more robust focus on literacy instruction and leads to an Iowa K-8 Reading Endorsement.
Dr. Gwen Marra, professor of education at Dordt, says the program changes will equip teachers with skills and knowledge that are in high demand in the field of education. “There are many teachers in the field who have not been trained in teaching reading from an evidence-based perspective,” she says. “This reading endorsement equips current teachers in the field with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to reach all students using best practices.”
“We have noticed that more practicing teachers are seeking this information and want to be equipped to instruct their students using the most effective knowledge and methods available. This program meets that need,” Marra adds.
Students enrolled in the Reading track will complete a series of courses designed to address the diverse needs of students. Courses such as Foundations of Special Education, Assessment of Learning Difficulties, Intervention for Reading Difficulties, and Experimental Design & Interpretation of Data will provide essential knowledge and practical, research-based strategies.
“This program will equip teachers in the field to effectively meet their students’ needs in reading instruction,” explains Marra. “It is an important shift that needs to happen in order for all students to develop the ability to read.”
Beyond a comprehensive curriculum, Dordt’s education program is equipped with faculty who bring extensive experience and a strong background in literacy education. “Dordt is thrilled to have faculty experts in research-based literacy instruction in the Education Department,” says Dr. Abby De Groot, director of the Teacher Preparation program at Dordt. “We are excited to utilize their experience and expertise to offer this program.”
