Dordt Offers 100% Online ABA Course Sequence

Dordt offers 100% online ABA course sequence

Dordt University will begin offering an online Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) course sequence starting this fall. The sequence, which is approved by the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI), meets the course requirements for the Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification exam. “This course sequence is an exciting component in Dordt’s expanding graduate program in special education,” says Dr. Steve Holtrop, director of graduate studies. “Rooted in the biblical perspective that every child is created in the image of God, these courses prepare teachers and therapists to take the national certification exam and deliver research-based treatments in school and clinical settings. Our collaborative course design provides relevant and engaging practical experience and prepares professionals for competence and confidence in this new field of behavior analysis.”

The sequence is 100% online and includes courses such as Foundations of Applied Behavior Analysis, Ethics for the BCBA, and Methods and Procedures for Behavioral Intervention. The sequence, which includes 21 credits, can be completed in two years, with a typical plan of study involving one or two courses per semester.

The cost to complete the ABA course sequence is $8,075, which is reasonably priced compared to other similar programs.

Dr. Kathleen VanTol, faculty director of the Thrive Center for ABA and course sequence director, feels that Dordt is uniquely able to help students develop their ABA skills from a Christian perspective.

“Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of interventions based on the principles of ABA when working with students with a variety of learning challenges,” says VanTol.

Joe Bakker, director of online education, is excited for what the ABA course sequence will bring to students.

“I am encouraged by how the ABA course sequence opens doors for Dordt students to bring Christ-centered renewal through the practices of Applied Behavior Analysis,” he says. “Our communities have tremendous need for caring, certified professionals to serve families and schools.”

“ABA is fun and rewarding,” adds VanTol. “Success in this field requires a combination of knowledge, creativity, and flexible thinking. ABA is used in many settings including schools, hospitals, corporations, counseling, and even athletics. ABA providers have the opportunity to positively impact someone who is facing a learning challenge.”

As an institution of higher education committed to the Reformed Christian perspective, Dordt University equips students, faculty, alumni, and the broader community to work toward Christ-centered renewal in all aspects of contemporary life. Dordt, located in Sioux Center, Iowa, is a comprehensive university named to the best college lists by U.S. News and World Report, Forbes.com, The Wall Street Journal, Washington Monthly, and Princeton Review.
