As interest in personalized flexible higher education pathways continues to grow, Dordt University is seeing increasing demand for associate degree options within its business program. In fact, nearly 10% of Dordt business majors are currently pursuing two-year degrees.
Within Dordt’s business program, students can earn associate (AA) degrees in various areas of business—from administrative assistant, event planning, retail and sales, and entrepreneurship.
According to Dale Zevenbergen, director of K&K Dooyema Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, the appeal of the associate degree pathway lies in both its long-term value and flexibility. For students uncertain about committing to a four-year degree, Dordt’s associate degree programs offer a flexible starting point without limiting future opportunities.
“There are a lot of opportunities in organizations for students with an AA, and they can easily continue on to a bachelor’s program, whether right away or later on through our online courses,” says Zevenbergen.
“That flexibility is one of my favorite dynamics of our AA program,” he adds.
Zevenbergen says Dordt’s business program is designed to help students gain practical experience while also discerning their next steps academically and professionally.
“The overall experience at Dordt helps students grow and transform in all areas of life,” he says. “Then the practical, real-experience opportunities allow students to actually put into practice what they’re learning in the classroom.”
While the AA pathway offers additional flexibility, Zevenbergen emphasizes that students still receive the same high-quality instruction and career preparation that define Dordt’s broader business program.
“If a prospective student isn’t sure whether they want to pursue a four-year degree or go straight into the workforce, the AA is a great option,” says Zevenbergen. “Students take courses right alongside those pursuing bachelor’s degrees, and they can move directly into the business world after completing the AA—or continue on and turn the AA into a bachelor’s degree.”
