Defenders trapshooting club performs well at latest competition

“It was a close competition, with Dordt breaking just two more targets than the Beavers,” says Dr. Tom Prinsen, professor of public relations and shooting sports adviser. “All three universities had representatives in the top five male and top five female individual scores.”

The Dordt University Defenders trapshooting club held an event at Rock Valley Gun Club on April 26, which was attended by the Buena Vista University Beavers and the South Dakota State University Jackrabbits.

“It was a close competition, with Dordt breaking just two more targets than the Beavers,” says Dr. Tom Prinsen, professor of public relations and shooting sports adviser. “All three universities had representatives in the top five male and top five female individual scores.”

Team results included:

  • Dordt University (221)
  • Buena Vista University (219)
  • South Dakota State University (203)

The top five male scores were:

  • Jaron Vanderhoff (BVU)
  • Austin Lammers (DU)
  • Lane Schmidt (SDSU)
  • Eric Van Veldhuizen (DU)
  • Ethan Miersma (DU)

The top five female scores were:

  • Alivia Holst (SDSU)
  • Alyssa Jordan (BVU)
  • Mackenzie Zalaznik (BVU)
  • Phoebe Flasley (BVU)
  • Grace Boomsma (DU)

What stood out to Prinsen about the Defenders’ trapshooting performance was their ability to have fun while competing to the best of their ability. “Even though the first round wasn’t great, the team members were still smiling and laughing with one another. They stayed relaxed and shot their best round of the season.”

One of the takeaways that Prinsen hopes the team members had from the event is that anyone can compete. “Team members have a variety of backgrounds; some are experienced and have shot competitively for years, while others are quite new to the sport,” he says. “We all support one another and enjoy the camaraderie.”
