Dordt and Sioux County Radio Team Up To Broadcast Defender Sports

(Monday, May 16; Sioux Center, Iowa) Dordt University and Sioux County Radio are pleased to announce a partnership to broadcast Dordt Defender athletics on KIHK, 106.9 FM. The partnership will expand the Dordt Media Network’s multimedia offerings to the FM radio band.

“We are pleased to be working with Sioux County Radio to provide play-by-play radio coverage of Defender athletics,” said Dordt University’s Director of Athletic Communications Mike Byker. “When Sioux County Radio approached us about a partnership we were intrigued immediately.  As we worked towards an agreement it became clear this will be beneficial for both parties and most importantly our fans in Northwest Iowa.”

The agreement includes extensive coverage of the Defender football, women’s volleyball, women’s basketball and men’s basketball schedules beginning with an August 31, 2022 volleyball match between Dordt and Briar Cliff in Sioux City.

Piet Westerbeek, General Manager of Sioux County Radio, is enthusiastic at the opportunity to broadcast Dordt University Athletics on KIHK.

“Our listenership is growing and having yet another local team to carry live is an excellent example of our strong community partnerships.  Teaming with Dordt University, combined with the extensive reach of 106.9 KIHK-FM, will give Defender Nation the coverage the coverage they deserve!” says Westerbeek.

Sioux County Radio began broadcasting in 1969 and currently features 106.9 KIHK, 93.9 KSOU-FM, KSOU-AM 1090 and 101.5 FM Sioux Ritmo. The group of stations has long been home for locally originated high school and college athletic broadcasts in Northwest Iowa.

The Dordt Media Network produces multi-camera video broadcasts of all home Defender athletic competitions along with online audio broadcasts of select home and road contests.  In 2021-22 the Dordt Media Network produced live coverage of over 180 competitions and had over 100,000 viewers and listeners while utilizing the online services of BlueFrame, Youtube, Mixlr and Facebook.
