Women's Basketball Battles Morningside Wednesday

The Dordt Defender women’s basketball team will travel to Sioux City, Iowa to face the Morningside Mustangs on Wednesday, November 17 at 6:00.
The Morningside Mustangs are 2-2 this season and have won two games in a row since dropping the first two games of the season to Saint Xavier and Olivet Nazarene. Since those losses on November 5 and 6 the Mustangs have beaten MidAmerica Nazarene (84-64) and Dakota Wesleyan (73-63).
Jamie Sale’s team is scoring 79.3 points per game and allow 77.5 points per contest. Morningside has gotten outrebounded 42.8-36.3 and have converted 46.3 percent of its field goals while opponents are making 43 percent. The Mustangs are committing 16.3 turnovers per game and force 16.5.
Sierra Mitchell is scoring 16.5 points per game and is making 38 percent of her three-point shots (11-29). Sophia Peppers scores 15 points per game with seven rebounds and 3.5 assists and Taylor Rodenburgh’s average is 13.3 with 7.3 rebounds and she is 10-17 from the three-point line for 59 percent. Chloe Lofstrom converts 12 points per game and takes in 5.3 rebounds per outing.
The Defenders are 5-1 this season with a loss to Grand View on October 28. Since then the Defenders have won four in a row over Dakota State, Bellevue, Marian and Valley City State.
Dordt is outscoring teams 74.8-66.8 and outrebound teams 39.2-34.7. The Defenders are converting 39.5 percent of its field goals and allow 42.3 and the Defenders have taken 154 free throws while opponents have 72 attempts. Dordt is making 78 percent of its free throws.
Ashtyn Veerbeek averages 19.3 points per game with 9.2 rebounds and has 2.8 blocked shots per game while making 54.7 percent of her field goal attempts. Bailey Beckman adds 10.2 points per game and Hayden Heimensen is at 9.8 points per game with 3.3 rebounds. Mya Chmielewski and Karly Gustafson add 9.5 and 9.2 points per game with Gustafson grabbing 5.8 rebounds.
Morningside beat Dakota Wesleyan on November 13 by a 73-63 count and pulled away in the third quarter with a 21-10 advantage. Mitchell and Peppers each had 14 and Rodenburgh and Lofstrom had 11 each with Loftstrom taking in 10 rebounds. Morningside had a 42-40 rebounding advantage and made 24-58 field goals.
Dordt turned away Valley City State with a fast start on November 13, 95-67. Veerbeek scored 24 points with nine rebounds and Gustafson had 15 points with six reobunds and four assists. Heimensen and Maggie Walker had 14 and 12 respectively.
Morningside swept the two meetings with the teams last season with the Mustangs winning in Sioux City on December 2 by a 85-79 count and Morningside won the second meeting in Sioux Center 82-73. Peppers had 25 points in the first game and Lofstrom had 15 and Veerbeek scored 27 for the Defenders and was 10-12 from the field.
A 26-19 second quarter in the second meeting led to a nine point Morningside win. Mitchell had 27 in the game and was 6-12 from the three-point line and Erika Feenstra led Dordt with 19 points and Veerbeek had 14 points with five blocked shots.
Dordt will host Concordia on Saturday and travels to Briar Cliff on Tuesday, November 23.
Morningside is set to host Bellevue on November 20 before traveling to Doane next Tuesday.
