(Thursday, August 12; Sioux Center, Iowa) The NAIA Preseason Women’s Volleyball Coaches’ Poll has been announced and the Dordt Defenders are rated fifth in the polling conducted by 19 coaches representing each of the conferences, Association of Independent Institutions and Unaffiliated Groups.
The Defenders posted an 11-5 record in GPAC play in 2020 and were 18-7 overall and advanced to the NAIA National Semifinals at the National Championship in April. Dordt is scheduled to play 10 matches this season against teams in the preseason poll.
Dordt returns 10 players who were a part of the regular rotation of players at the end of the season including First-Team NAIA All-American Brenna Krommendyk (Junior; Belle Plain, Minnesota) and honorable mention NAIA All-American honoree Allison Timmermans (Senior; Orange City, Iowa). Krommendyk averaged 2.48 kills per set and 1.41 blocks per outing while Timmermans led the team in kills with a 2.57 average. Jessi Franken (Senior; Hull, Iowa) and Corrina Timmermans (Junior; Orange City, Iowa) also return for a balanced attack with 2.55 and 2.42 kills per set respectively.
"Our really strong conference had five teams in the NAIA National Quarterfinals this past season. That is incredible. And, our really strong conference has only won a single NAIA National Championship in its history. To me, that means that Dordt Volleyball needs to elevate every aspect of our team play. The season ahead has a strong veteran returning core of experienced athletes. Our goal this year is to grow in all areas of our lives and be outward focused in loving our Heavenly Father with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, while also loving our neighbor as ourselves (Mark 12:30-31). At the end of striving for those goals, we will be fulfilled and be able to reflect back on a season that started well, went well, and finished well,” said Dordt volleyball coach Chad Hanson.
Defending champion Missouri Baptist earned the preseason nod with 529 points and all 19 first place votes. Jamestown and Midland are picked second and third and Park is fourth in the polling with 473 points while Dordt has 470 points. The Defenders defeated Park in pool play at the NAIA National Championship before being ousted in the semifinals by Missouri Baptist.
The Defenders will open the 2021 season on the road against Morningside on Wednesday, August 25 before traveling to Caldwell, Idaho to play four matches on Friday and Saturday, August 27 and 28. Dordt’s first home match will be on Wednesday, September 1 against Briar Cliff in GPAC play.
The 2020 GPAC volleyball season will consist of 16 conference matches with 12 teams competing for the conference crown. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team in the preseason poll. The NAIA National Championship Opening Round will be played on November 20, 2021 and the final site will be at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa, November 30-December 4.
