Men's Basketball Takes Votes In First NAIA Poll

(Wednesday, October 14; Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team is in the ‘Others Receiving Votes’ category of the 2020-21 NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll released on Wednesday, October 14.  Earlier in the day the Defenders were picked third in the GPAC Coaches’ Poll.

The Defenders had a 22-9 record last season and finished third in the GPAC regular season standings with a 13-7 record in the league.  Dordt returns its top three scorers from a team that averaged 86 points per game and allowed 76. Garrett Franken tops the returners with a 15.9 points per game average and a 7.5 rebounds per game average—both tops on the team in 2019-20 and helped him to All-GPAC recognition.  Jesse Jansma and Cade Bleeker both return after scoring 12.3 and 10.2 points per game and both knocked down 53 and 64 three-point shots respectively. Ben Gesink also returns after playing in 31 games and scored 7.5 points per game and had over two assists per outing.

Georgetown (Kentucky) is the no. 1 team in the ranking with 12 first place votes 578 total points. Mid-American Christian (Oklahoma) holds the no. 2 spot in the first single division poll since the early 1990s. Morningside, the 2020 GPAC regular season champion, is no. 7 in the voting done by 21 coaches representing each of the conferences and Association of Independent Institutions.

Dordt is scheduled to open the 2020-21 season on the road against Dakota State on October 30.  The Defenders currently have 24 games on the schedule and will open this year and will open league play on November 14 against Midland before hosting Dakota Wesleyan on November 18 in the first home game of the season.
