Hockey Hosts Nebraska This Weekend

On the Docket…

The Defender hockey team will host Nebraska in ACHA Division III hockey on Friday and Saturday, January 24 and 25.  These will be the final home contests of the season for the Defender hockey team as the contests next weekend have been canceled.

The Foe…

Nebraska is 11-4 this season and has outscored teams 71-50.  The Huskers are topped by Jordan Hank and Evan Johnson with 11 goals each and Hank has a team high 13 assists. Chris Hysack has eight goals and seven assists and Stephen Doll has seven goals and seven assists.

Bennett Stanchfield has played 563 minutes in goal with 29 goals allowed and 300 saves. Alex Kopf has played 403 minutes in goal and has two shutouts with 21 goals allowed and 173 saves.

The Defenders…

The Defenders are 4-9 this season and have been outscored 67-41.  Eli Visscher has a team high eight goals and nine assists and Logan Visser has seven goals and eight assists. Jaren Brue has five goals and seven assists while Fred Bullock and Samuel De Jongalso has four goals. Bryce Andry and David Burns split the time in goal with Andry playing 360 minutes with 30 goals allowed and Burns has played 420 minutes with 266 saves.  

Last Time…

The Huskers last played on December 7 and lost to Kansas 4-1. Nebraska got on the board in the third period after giving up a pair in both the first and second periods to trail 4-0. Jonathon Cowley scored the goal off an assist by Alex Robb and Willy Lutz. Kopf faced 31 shots in goal and had 27 saves in the loss.

The Defenders lost a 6-2 decision to Creighton on December 6 in their last action. Samuel De Jong’s goal in the first period tied the score briefly but Creighton scored three in a row for a 4-1 lead. Caleb Koomans got a goal late in the second period but was unable to push all the way back in falling 6-2. David Burns faced 40 shots in goal and had 34 saves in the loss.

The Series…

The Defenders and Huskers have played twice this season with Nebraska winning both. The first meeting was back on October 11 in the opener for Dordt and Nebraska won it 6-0 with Jordan Hank scoring two. David Burns was in goal and faced 58 shots with 52 saves.

Nebraska was a 4-2 winner on October 25  as well with Jaren Brue and Collin O’Brien accounting for Dordt’s goals. Nebraska scored a goal midway through the third period to put the game out of reach from 3-2 to 4-2. Dordt’s Bryce Andry faced 44 shots in goal and had 40 saves while Bennett Stanchfield faced 40 shots for Nebraska and made 38 saves. Evan Johnson had two goals in the win.

What’s Next…

Dordt will conclude the regular season on Saturday, February 8 at Creighton. It appears the Defenders will qualify for the MACHA Playoffs in Springfield, Missouri on February 14 and 15.
