Byker Claims Player Of Week Honor From GPAC

(Monday, October 22; Sioux Center, Iowa) The Great Plains Athletic Conference and Hauff Mid-America Sports have announced the football players-of-the-week for games played Saturday, October 20. Dordt’s Casey Byker (Senior; Hudsonville, Michigan) was named the defensive player-of-the-week.

Byker intercepted three passes and turned two of them into touchdowns.  His first interception came as Jamestown was poised to tie the game early in the game.  He returned that pick for a school-record 97 yards and a touchdown.  Midway through the second half he took another interception for 41 yards and a touchdown to give Dordt a 28-6 lead.

The safety then made another interception in Dordt’s endzone in the second half.  He was in on six solo tackles and broke up another pass. Byker also punted four times with an average of 39.6 yards per punt and a career long of 65 yards.

“Casey played an incredible game on Saturday,” said Dordt College football coach Joel Penner. “He is being recognized for his extraordinary safety play; as he should, but it’s also worth mentioning that he had a tremendous day as a punter and continues to lead our team well as a captain.  Casey is the perfect example of a player that gets better and better the longer he plays.”

Dordt is 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the GPAC and will host Briar Cliff in the home finale for the Defenders this weekend with a 1:00 kickoff on October 27.
