Baseball Starts Arizona Play

GAMETIME…

Dordt is scheduled to play eight games in five days in Tucson, Arizona beginning Monday, March 12. The Defenders will face Dickinson State and Mayville State on Monday at 3:00 and 6:30 and face Valley City State in a doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 4:00.  Results can be found at www.dordt.edu/athletics soon after the games are over.

THE OPPONENT…

Dickinson State is 0-3 this season and started its games in Tucson Sunday with a loss to Concordia (Minnesota) and a 5-4 loss to Framingham. The Blue Hawks have been out scored 29-10 so far and are batting .234 while teams are batting .434 against them. TJ McCullough has a .455 batting average and Jacob Cuch is batting .364. Jalen Lane has pitched in seven innings for Dickinson State with nine strikeouts and he is without a pitching decision.

Mayville State is 6-5 this season with Brady Nygaard leading them with 11 hits and six doubles. Riley Nelson and Jonathan Pluth each have ten hits this season. Mason Swegarden is 3-0 on the mound with a 2.33 earned run average in 27 innings pitched. He has a team high 21 strikeouts and teams are batting .202 against him.

Valley City State is 4-9 this season and split with Northwestern in its last two games. The Vikings are led by Brady Smith and Grant Wehseler with 17 hits each and Wehseler has three homeruns and 15 runs batted in. Emmanuel Leyva also has three homeruns with a .341 batting average and 12 runs batted in. Four different players have one win each for the Vikings.

DEFENDER NOTES…

Dordt is 0-2 this season with a pair of losses to Peru State. Taylor Neuroth is the only Defender with multiple hits through two games and has a .429 batting average with two runs batted in. Brandon Fokkema and Luke Drooger have a start each for the Defenders and no pitcher has more than three innings pitched.

NEXT UP…

Dordt is off until March 15 when the Defenders face Jamestown in a doubleheader.
