Dordt Softball Travels To Doane

GAMETIME… Dordt College will travel to Crete, Nebraska to face Doane College on Saturday, April 5.  The games were originally scheduled to be played in Sioux Center but have been moved due to unplayable conditions at Open Space Park.

SCOUTING REPORT… Doane is 20-7 overall and 3-3 in the GPAC.  The wins for the Tigers in league play are over Nebraska Wesleyan (twice) and Dakota Wesleyan.  Doane has been swept by Concordia and split with Dakota Wesleyan.

Doane is batting .345 as a team and have outscored teams 146-103.  Sam Valadez is batting .500 this season with 31 hits, three homeruns and 16 runs batted in.  Valadez has also been issued 12 bases on balls and has a slugging percentage of .710.  Shelby Mendlik has played in just 11 games and has a .467 batting average with nine runs batted in and she has three stolen bases.  Amber Alvarez and Heather Ramirez bat .419 and .402 respectively and Ramirez has a team high 33 hits with 13 runs batted in and she has 15 stolen bases out of 18 attempts.  Whitney Hinn and Nichole Diaz both have eight stolen bases and Diaz tops the team with 17 runs batted in.

Ellie Doughty is 9-2 with a 2.25 earned run average in 74 2/3 innings of work and has 66 strikeouts with 23 bases on balls.  Malory Christiansen is 3-2 with a 2.77 earned run average and is second on the team in innings pitched with 30.

DEFENDER NOTES… Dordt is 6-18 this season with a 2-4 GPAC record after a sweep of Mount Marty. 

The Defenders are batting .276 as a team and have scored 88 runs.  Ashton Beaird tops the team with a .384 batting average and she has 28 hits which is tied with Erica White for the team lead.  Beaird has six homeruns and 18 runs batted in. White has a .359 batting average with 12 doubles and 24 runs batted in and she has five homeruns.  Sidney Larsen is good for a .304 batting average while Kassidy Van Voorst has a .299 batting average and leads the team with 14 stolen bases out of 14 attempts.

Larsen is 4-9 this season with a 5.57 earned run average and she has pitched 72 innings while striking out 37.  Samantha Dunn is 2-1 with a 4.26 earned run average and she has struck out 19 in 25 innings.  Haley Fligge has also pitched 46 innings and has struck out 31 batters.

LAST TIME…Doane nipped Nebraska Wesleyan on April 2 by a 7-6 score in game one and then won game two in dominating fashion 9-1.

Dordt swept Mount Marty on Wednesday, April 2 10-6 and 10-0.

Dordt College bounced back from a 3-0 deficit to win a 10-6 decision in game one.

Mount Marty scored three in the second inning with Dordt answering with three in the home half of the inning.

Michal Hoogland homered to drive in two and Jayden Smolders had a single that tied the game. Dordt got two more in the third for a 5-3 lead. Bethany Dykstra knocked in a run in the fourth on a single and Erica White smashed a homerun for an 8-3 lead. White later knocked in two runs with a double in the sixth inning to seal the 10-6 win.

Dordt got two hits each from Dykstra, White, Beaird and Hoogland, accounting for eight of Dordt's 11 hits. White knocked in two runs with her double and homerun. Hoogland also had two runs batted in.

Sidney Larsen got the win while allowing four earned runs out of six total and struck out seven with two walks.

Dordt College won an 8-0, five inning decision to sweep Mount Marty in game two of the twinbill.

The game, played in cool and damp conditions, ended on a Bethany Dykstra single in the fifth inning for the needed eight run difference.

Dordt got a run in the first and then erupted for five in the second when they sent 11 batters to the plate and totaled seven hits and took advantage of two errors. Dordt also had scored a run each in the fourth and fifth innings for their sixth win of the season.

Ashton Beaird, Bethany Dykstra, Michal Hoogland and Jayden Smolders all had two hits as Dordt pounded out 13 hits. Erica White and Beaird both got credit for two runs batted in.

Samantha Dunn got the win while scattering three hits and she struck out five with no walks.

THE SERIES… Dordt trails the series with Doane 19-15. 

Dordt College was limited to three hits in an 8-0 loss to the Doane Tigers in game one of their doubleheader in Crete, Nebraska on Saturday afternoon, April 20, 2013.

The Defenders had runners as far as second base in the first and fifth innings while Doane scored three in the third, three in the fourth and another pair in the fifth for the shortened win.

Doane outhit the Defenders 11-3.

Dordt got singles from Shantelle Gritters, Sadie Bolze and Kassidy Van Voorst while Ashton Beaird absorbed the loss while walking three and allowed eight earned runs.

Dordt College was on the short end of a 13-3 softball score in game two of the doubleheader.

The Defenders allowed three in the first and six in the fourth before getting on the board with a pair in the fifth when Ashley Van Kooten doubled in Kassidy Van Voorst and Bethany Dykstra. Doane got four in the sixth and Dordt was able to respond with one in the bottom of the sixth on an Ashton Beaird homerun and the game ended after the sixth by virtue of the eight-run difference rule. Dordt was the home team as the game was originally scheduled to be played in Sioux Center.

Dordt was outhit 17-3 with Van Kooten's double and Beaird's homerun accounting for the extra base hits and Bethany Dykstra had a single.

Sidney Larsen took the loss while allowing 12 earned runs, walking one and she struck out one.

NEXT…Both teams are in action on Tuesday, April 8 with the Defenders hosting Northwestern and the Tigers traveling to face Bellevue in non-conference play.
