Dordt Softball Hosts Mount Marty

GAMETIME… Dordt is scheduled to host Mount Marty in GPAC play on Wednesday, April 2.  The games can be heard at  and on KDCR 88.5 FM.  The contests are set to begin at 5:00.

Results of the games can be found at  and at at the conclusion of play.

SCOUTING REPORT… Mount Marty is 3-11 overall and 1-3 in the GPAC.  The wins for the Lancers are over Purdue North Central, Alfred and Briar Cliff.  Mount Marty is 1-2 in its last three games this season.

Courtney Hansen is batting .435 this season with two doubles, two homeruns and seven runs batted in.  Karlee Kozak is batting .375 with 12 hits, two doubles and eight runs batted in.  Kristin Loutsch and Olivia Rodruquez each have eight runs batted in and Loutsch shares team honors with Courtney Hansenwith two homeruns.

Amber Krause is 2-4 with a 3.63 earned run average and has struck out 31 batters in 44 innings of work.

Mount Marty has a team earned run average of 4.86 and a team batting average of .225.

DEFENDER NOTES… The Defenders are 4-18 this season with an 0-4 mark in GPAC play after losses to Morningside and Hastings last week in league play. 

Ashton Beaird leads the team with a .358 batting average, 24 hits, seven doubles and six homeruns and 15 runs batted in.  Erica White is batting .352 with 25 hits and 18 runs batted in with four homers while Kassidy Van Voorst and Sidney Larsen are both hovering around .300 with a .296 and .294 batting average respectively.  Van Voorst leads the team with 14 stolen bases.

Larsen is 3-9 this season with a 5.62 earned run average and she has 30 strikeouts in 65 innings of work.  Haley Fligge has pitched 46 innings and has 31 strikeouts.

LAST TIME…Mount Marty lost to Concordia on March 30 by scores of 13-4 and 8-5 in their most recent play.

The Dordt College softball team lost a 5-3 decision to Hastings College on Saturday, March 29 in game one of their doubleheader played in Hastings, Nebraska.

The Defenders squandered a 3-1 lead after four innings in dropping the contest. Hastings scored one in the second before Dordt scored three in the third inning. Ashton Beaird singled in Kassidy Van Voorst and Andrea Pierce and Michal Hoogland’s fielder’s choice got Bethany Dykstra in.

Hastings came back with a run in the fifth inning on a pair of hits to cut the gap to 3-2. Dordt got runners on second and third with one out in the sixth but came away with nothing and Hastings scored three in the home half of the sixth to take the lead on three hits.

Trailing by two, the Defenders rallied for a scoring threat in the top of the seventh as Bethany Dykstra and Erica White each singled and Ashton Beaird loaded the bases with a single and one down. Michal Hoogland lined out for the second out of the inning and a strikeout finished the Dordt threat with the tying run at second base.

Sidney Larsen took the loss for the Defenders with 10 hits and two walks allowed and she struck out two.
Hastings College staked itself to a 5-0 lead after two innings and went on to defeat Dordt 6-2 in game two of the doubleheader.

Hastings struck for four runs on four hits in the first inning and then added a run on three hits in the second frame.

Dordt got on the board in the fourth inning when Erica Qhite walked and Ashton Beaird followed with a double and Sidney Larsen eventually lifted a sacrifice fly that plated a run.

Hastings countered with a run in the fifth inning on three hits and left the bases loaded. The Defenders got that run back in the seventh but got no closer with Kassidy Van Voorst’s fielder’s choice getting Amanda Roberts in.

Dordt was outhit 12-2 with Haley Fligge absorbing the loss with nine hits allowed with a walk and a strikeout. Samantha Dunn went the final two innings and gave up three hits with a run, a walk and two strikeouts.

Beaird and Jayden Smolders each had a hit for Dordt.

THE SERIES… Dordt leads the series with Mount Marty 29-11 after splitting last year’s games.

A first inning run was enough for Mount Marty to hold off the Dordt Defenders in Great Plains Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 in a 1-0 contest at Yankton, South Dakota.

Dordt was outhit 5-3 and left the bases loaded in the second inning after getting them full with one out. The Defenders also left the bases loaded in the third inning as Sidney Larsen kept the Defenders in the game while striking out six and walking none.

Ashley Van Kooten had two singles and Brittany Kooiker accounted for Dordt's other single and was issued a base on balls.

Dordt College came roaring back from a 5-0 deficit to defeat Mount Marty in game two of their doubleheader in Yankton, South Dakota by a 10-7 final.

The Lancers scored three in the first and two in the second for a 5-0 lead before Dordt struck for two runs in the third with Brittany Kooiker and Ashton Beaird delivering rbi singles. The Defenders evened the score with three runs on three hits in the fourth. Shantelle Gritters doubled in a run and Ashley Van Kooten hit a two run homerun for a 5-5 tie.

A Haley Huisman single in the fifth gave the Defenders a 6-5 advantage but Mount Marty got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth for a 7-6 advantage. Dordt scored the final four runs of the game with Kooiker and Beaird knocking in a run each with doubles in the sixth and Huisman got a run across on an error. The Defenders added an unearned run in the top of the seventh.

Beaird was 3-4 at the plate with two runs and two runs batted in. Kooiker was 2-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in and Huisman and Van Kooten each got credit for two runs batted in and Van Kooten was walked twice.

Sidney Larsen allowed 12 hits with four strikeouts and two walks issued and five earned runs allowed.

NEXT…Mount Marty is scheduled to host Doane on April 4 and Midland on April 6. 

The Defenders will host Concordia and Doane on Friday and Saturday, April 5 and 6.
