Dordt Baseball Scheduled To Host Presentation

GAMETIME… Dordt College baseball is scheduled to host Presentation on Wednesday, April 2 in doubleheader action starting at 2:00.

SCOUTING REPORT… Presentation is 5-26 this season after starting the season 0-14.  The Saints have wins this season over Crown (Minnesota), Briar Cliff, Viterbo (Wisconsin) and Jamestown (North Dakota).  The wins over Viterbo and Jamestown were both by 1-0 counts.  The Saints are 1-3 in North Star Conference play.

Ryan Baldonado leads the team with a .323 batting average and he has 20 hits, five doubles, a triple, a homerun and ten runs batted in.  Tony Hofman has a .313 batting average to go with 21 hits and Chad Ellingson has a team high 29 hits with five doubles and 14 runs batted in.  Drew Sanders leads the team with 17 runs batted in and has a team high six stolen bases while batting .231.

Five different players have a win each for Presentation with Ellingson leading the team with 39 innings pitched.  Baldonado has a 3.04 earned run average and has 16 strikeouts in 26 innings of work. 

DEFENDER NOTES… The Dordt Defenders are 1-3 in GPAC play and 8-10 overall.  Dordt was last in action with Hastings and Doane in GPAC play over the weekend and went 1-3 last weekend in those games.

Cameron Gingerich leads the Defenders with a .359 batting average and he has 23 hits and 14 runs scored with nine runs batted in and five stolen bases.  Andy Kollbaum is batting .333 with 18 hits and five doubles while Dane LePlatt is batting .327 with 11 runs batted in.  Jason Wapnick leads the team with 17 runs batted in and Nathan Fraley has scored 15 runs and has a team high eight stolen bases.

Lucas Carls has a 3.38 earned run average on the mound despite an 0-2 record and 16 innings pitched in four appearances.  Michael Grady is 0-1 with a 4.05 earned run average with one save in five appearances and John Drenten is 1-1 with a 4.32 earned run average and he has appeared in five games.  Ben Van Kekerix is 3-0 with a 4.91 earned run average and has a team high 30 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings of work.

THE SERIES…Dordt leads the series 1-0 with that win happening on Monday, March 10 this season in Tucson, Arizona. The Defenders scored a 7-4 win in the scheduled nine inning game.

Dordt got the scoring going with a Nathan Forseth triple in the second and he scored when Jason Wapnick lifted a sacrifice fly to left field. Presentation touched Dordt starter Ben Van Kekerix for a run in the second but left two baserunners stranded.

Dordt broke the tie with four runs on four hits in the fifth as Nathan Fraley, Bryan Wallman and Cameron Gingerich all had run scoring singles and Wapnick had a sacrifice fly.

The Saints came back with three runs on three hits in the fifth inning but Van Kekerix was able to get out of the inning without relinquishing the lead.

Michael Grady came on in relief after the sixth inning and got two runs to work with in the eighth when Dane Le Platt reached on an error, scoring Anthony Maule and Jake Thayer followed with a single that got Le Platt in.

Ben Van Kekerix allowed four runs—two of them earned, and surrendered seven hits with five strikeouts and two bases on balls. Michael Grady got the save while allowing one hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

Jake Thayer, Bryan Wallman and Andy Kollbaum all had multiple hits with Jason Wapnick knocking in two runs and he had a single. Kollbaum and Forseth had the only extra base hits for Dordt with the triple and a double.

Adam McFarland took the loss for Presentation with five runs allowed on six hits.

LAST TIME… Presentation lost a pair to Jamestown in conference play on March 30.  The Jimmies won the first game 9-4 and earned the sweep after coming from behind 7-5 after four innings to win it 8-7.  Jamestown scored a run in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings to take the win.  Presentation was outhit 12-10 in the second game while both teams had ten hits each in game one. 

Dordt College lost a 10-0 game in the first of two contests played in Crete, Nebraska against the Doane Tigers on Saturday, March 29.

Doane got on the board with two runs in the first inning and another four in the second. Doane scored the six runs on six hits.

Back to back singles in the fourth inning got a rally started with Cameron Gingerich and Aaron Parks getting on base but a pair of fly outs ended the threat.

Doane scored two in the fourth and two in the fifth with Dordt threatening with a pair of hits by Jake Thayer and Aaron Parks in the sixth but the two runners were stranded when the inning ended.

Dordt was outhit 14-5 with Aaron Parks getting two singles. All of Dordt’s hits were singles.

Josh Van Kekerix took the loss with three and a third innings of work and walked two with one strikeout. Van Kekerix was charged with seven earned runs. Cole Samuelson went an inning and two thirds with two runs allowed on four hits and struck out one. Jeremy Engbers worked a scoreless sixth inning.

The Doane Tigers used single runs in the first, third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings to build a 5-0 lead and then put the game away with four runs in the eighth inning for a 9-0 win over the Dordt Defenders in game two of their doubleheader on Saturday in GPAC baseball action in Crete, Nebraska.

Dordt had a scoring threat in the first with Cameron Gingerich singling after Jake Thayer reached with a walk. Dordt couldn’t move the runners up the final two outs recorded without incident.

Dordt didn’t get another baserunner until the sixth inning when Jake Thayer reached on an error. Dordt got a hit each in the eighth and ninth innings before falling 9-0.

Gingerich had two singles and Anthony Maule had Dordt’s other hit as they were outhit 16-3 by the conference leader. Nathan Forseth took the loss after working five and a third innings and allowed four runs on ten hits. Josh Peterson went an inning and two thirds struck out four and allowed two hits. Jeremy Engbers and Tyler Wiedner worked the final frame.

NEXT UP… Presentation is scheduled to have a little time off before resuming its schedule on April 12 against Dickinston State.

The Defenders are scheduled to host Nebraska Wesleyan and Concordia on Friday and Saturday, April 4 and 5 in GPAC play.
