Dordt grads, Pres. Zylstra in spring concert

In their final performance before commencement, Dordt College seniors in the chamber orchestra, concert band, campus band and jazz band will receive special recognition at the instrumental ensembles spring concert, scheduled for Wednesday, April 30, at the B. J. Haan Auditorium, 7:30 p.m. Spring Concert

Dordt’s president, Dr. Carl E. Zylstra, will also make a rare stage appearance at the concert, joining the jazz band with a piano solo in an early Dixieland band tune, Ain’t She Sweet. The jazz band, under the direction of Mr. Norm Gaines, will also present The Joy of Cookin’, a contemporary jazz tune for big bands; the big band classic, Satin Doll; and a tune from “My Fair Lady,” On the Street Where You Live, featuring vocal soloist Rachel Persenaire and baritone saxophone player Lindsay Derksen.

The Chamber Orchestra, directed by Dr. Henry Duitman, will perform a movement of Elgar's Serenade and a movement of Britten's Simply Symphony.

The Concert Band, also directed by Duitman, will perform the march Die Wacht Am Rhein by von Blon, Uranus from "The Planets" by Holst, and An American in Paris by Gershwin.

The Campus Band, directed by Julie Hulstein, will present a march from Tchaikovsky’s Symphony Six and Sarendole by Bizet, along with a movement from the First Suite by Holst.

There is no admission fee for the concert. The public is encouraged to attend and enjoy the wide array of music.
