Mia Kornelis and Peter Kuipers present joint music recital at Dordt College

February 29, 2012

Dordt College juniors Mia Kornelis and Peter Kuipers will present a music recital Friday, March 2, at 3 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. A reception will follow.

Kornelis, of Sioux Center, Iowa, will present the vocal portion of the recital. Her soprano vocals will soar as she performs pieces ranging from baroque to the 20th century. “My favorite pieces are the French Romantic arias ‘Je Veux Vivre’ from Roméo et Juliette and the ‘Flower Duet’ from Lakmé, because of the gorgeous melodies and soaring high notes,” said Kornelis.

Majoring in music management, Kornelis is a regional finalist in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition and is the recipient of the Jack Groetenhuis Memorial Scholarship at Dordt College. Her vocal instructor is Pam De Haan.

Kuipers, of Platte, South Dakota, will perform several pieces on trumpet. Some of his songs include “Trumpet Concerto” by Hummel, “Legend” by Enesco, and “Let the Bright Seraphim” from Sampson by Handel.

Kuipers is majoring in K-12 music education. This summer he and Kornelis will be featured players on the 2012 Chamber Orchestra Tour through Europe performing “Let the Bright Seraphim.”

Kuipers’ trumpet instructor is Scott Olson, the director of the Dordt College Jazz Band.

Other participants in the recital include piano accompanist junior Brian De Young (Sioux Center, Iowa) and mezzo-soprano vocalist junior Maria Bouwkamp (Pella, Iowa). To learn more about Dordt College’s music program, visit
