Canceled: Carve your masterpiece in the snow

February 3, 2012

A 48-hour snow carving frenzy will NOT begin at Dordt College on February 9, when the college had hoped to host the first annual Prairie Grass Snow Sculpting Competition. Teams would have had two days to sculpt their work of art out of a four-foot cube of snow provided by the college.

The plan had been for sculpting to begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 9, and end at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 11, between the B.J. Haan Auditorium and the Kuyper Apartments. The college planned to set up lights up at night so sculptors could work whenever and for however long they like.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your feelings about snow), the immediate forecast seems to indicate there will be little or no snow on the ground at the time of the competition. Anyone who has already registered will receive a refund.

If we have a more normal Iowa winter next year, keep an eye out for the inaugural snow carving event in 2013.
