Author Ruth Tucker to speak at Convocation

January 7, 2003

The start of the spring academic term at Dordt College will be marked with a convocation ceremony on Thursday, Jan. 16, at 10:30 a.m. The public is invited to attend. Ruth Tucker

The ceremony at the B. J. Haan Auditorium will feature guest speaker, Ruth Tucker, from Grand Rapids, MI. The author of 15 books, Tucker will speak on the topic of her latest book, Walking Away from Faith: Unraveling the Mystery of Belief and Unbelief. Her message probes the emotional and intellectual challenges to religious faith that often lead one to doubt and, in many cases, to walk away from one’s faith.

“Why is it that (many) cannot seem to believe?” Tucker writes. “And why is it that others cannot seem to retain their beliefs, despite valiant efforts? I have pondered these questions for decades, and I now seek to offer some tentative responses – primarily through the voices of those who have, so to speak, been there, done that.” Her book stems from the author’s own struggle, embodied in the well-known passage from Mark 9:24, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.”

Dr. Tucker is an associate professor of missiology at Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids. She will conduct other lectures and meet with students in addition to speaking at the spring convocation.
