The Nursing Department at Dordt College held a pinning ceremony Thursday, May 6, at which 11 Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students were presented a nursing pin and white New Testaments from the Gideon Society.

Members of the graduating class are Abigail Cordel, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Lindy Groenendyk, Jenison, Mich.; Jenna Heerema, Thunder Bay, Ont.; Abbie Horstman, Le Mars, Iowa; Jane Kroese, Hull, Iowa; Jenni Mellema, Inwood, Iowa; Amy Schroedermeier, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Nicole Top, Maurice, Iowa; Katie Van’t Hof, Leota, Minn.; Melodie VandenBorn, Edmonton, Alb.; and Allison Wesselius, Sioux Center, Iowa.

The keynote address was presented by Gloria Zylstra, RN and wife of Dordt’s president, Dr. Carl E. Zylstra. Zylstra noted she has been a nurse for over 40 years, and was wearing the nursing pin presented to her when she became a nurse. She challenged the new nurses to practice compassion and love in Jesus’ name, and encouraged them to be servants of God, which will make them great nurses.

Class speaker Amy Schroedermeier shared memories of time spent together, with Jane Kroese sharing a power point slideshow.

Closing remarks were shared by Professor of Nursing Kate VanderVeen, who reminded the class of nurses that what makes them different as Christian nurses is “who we serve and how we serve,” and that each patient they minister to is a child of God.
