Make reservations now for Dordt senior theater performance

April 1, 2010

Advance reservations can now be made for Machinal, a Dordt College senior production to be staged in Dordt’s New World Theatre April 8 through 10. The Thursday performance is at 7:30 p.m., while the Friday and Saturday performances begin at 9:30 p.m.

Machinal is directed by Danielle Roos, theatre arts major with an emphasis in acting and directing, and a second major in digital media production. She is the daughter of Derick and Arnola Roos, Sioux Center.

The play’s title means “automatic” or “mechanical” in French, and is loosely based on the murder trial of Ruth Snyder, who was convicted of murdering her husband and put to death in the electric chair. It is the story of a young woman’s struggle to figure out her role in the world of work, marriage, and family. Her questions leave her feeling trapped and willing to do anything to find freedom. The 1928 Broadway premiere of this play by American playwright and journalist Sophie Treadwell was considered one of the highpoints of expressionist theatre on the American stage.

The cast for the production includes Jason and Mia Kornelis, Sioux Center; Maria Bouwkamp, Pella, Iowa; Lee Radde, Cologne, Minn.; Grace Schmidt, St. Paul, Minn.; Thadd Harrington, Lincoln, Neb.; Nate Scheuers, Fox Lake, Wis.; Emily Hageman, Littleton, Colo.; and Jenna Veenbaas, Abbotsford, BC.

Tickets are $2 for adults, and are free for Dordt students and employees. Reservations are recommended due to limited seating availability: reserve tickets on-line.
