South Dakota Jazz Orchestra performance at Dordt February 23
February 15, 2010
The South Dakota Jazz Orchestra (SDJO) will present a free concert at Dordt College Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium.
The Dordt College Jazz Band will also be performing under the direction of Scott Olson, who is also a member of the SDJO.
The South Dakota Jazz Orchestra is one of the most consistently outstanding big band jazz ensembles in the region. Performances include works by jazz masters such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Oliver Nelson, and Stan Kenton, as well as the music of new jazz composers.
Weekly Monday night performances in downtown Sioux Falls provide a home base for the group, fostering talented musicians and offering the opportunity to work with guest artists.
The SDJO has backed some of the best-known jazz musicians working today. Recently featured artists include Steve Weist, jazz trombonist and composer; Dennis DiBlasio, jazz baritone saxophonist, flutist, and composer; Steve Wright, jazz trumpeter and composer; Matt Wallace, jazz tenor saxophonist; Mike Miller, jazz guitarist; and jazz multi-reed virtuoso, Chris Vadala.
Olson says the non-profit South Dakota Jazz Orchestra brings to jazz what the philharmonic gave to classical music: a modern audience, a standard of excellence and a nurturing creative community.
This concert is sponsored by the Dordt College Music Department and is free and open to the public.
