Poetry reading Sunday, Sept. 20

September 14, 2009

The Iowa Poetry Association’s annual anthology of poems won’t be released until October, but area residents have the opportunity next Sunday, Sept. 20, to hear poems that will be published in Lyrical Iowa 2009, read by local authors at Dordt College.

Emeritus professor and writer Mike Vanden Bosch won first place in the Poetry Association’s adult general category and read his poem, “Reaping.” Recently retired professors Dave and Jeri Schelhaas also had poems selected for the volume and will present samplings of their work.

Also presenting readings will be professors Bob De Smith, Bill Elgersma, Howard Schaap, Jim Schaap, Leah Zuidema, and Mary Dengler.

This is the 22nd annual Dordt College English faculty and friends poetry reading, presented in the Science Building lecture hall (S101). Along with poetry, a variety of prose pieces and personal reflections will round out the program for the evening. Refreshments will be served, and everyone is invited to attend.

Several Dordt students in Professor Howard Schaap’s spring writing class also submitted entries in this year’s Lyrical Iowa competition, and their poems will be published in the college student division of the anthology released in October: Jane Wegener (Edgerton, MN) was awarded third place; Jurgen Boerma (Pantego, NC) received first honorable mention; Laura Heckman (Canton, SD) received second honorable mention; and Merlyndi Prosper (Coulibistrie, Dominica) received third honorable mention. Also being published in Lyrical Iowa are Jessica Klopstra and Dustin Biel from Lacombe, AB; and Luke Schut and Larissa Arkema from Pella, IA.

Judges chose from among more than 1,400 adult and nearly 1,000 student entries to award cash prizes for sonnets, haiku, humorous verse, national-world events, indigenous to Iowa, poems for children and general categories. The volume will be released in October.
