Christmas concert features Dordt Orchestra, Concert Band
November 26, 2008
The Dordt College Concert Band and Chamber Orchestra will present a concert on Friday, Dec. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. The program will primarily feature classic instrumental Christmas compositions.
The Chamber Orchestra will present the Christmas concerto “Concerto Grosso Op. 6, No. 8” by Arcangelo Corelli featuring Alice Yoo (South Korea) and Amber Wiersma (Lacombe, Canada) on violin, Kiley Boone (Sioux Center) on cello, and Krista De Vries (Orange City) on harpsichord.
The orchestra will also perform a medieval Spanish tune “Riu, Riu, Chiu” by Marshall Fine; a chorale prelude on the melody “Puer Nobis Nascitur” by Canadian organist and composer Healey Willan; and the “Rhythmic Variations on Two Ancient Hymns” by Howard Hanson.
The Dordt College Concert Band will open its portion of the concert with “Jubilant Holiday” by Sean O’Loughlin, followed by Robert Cameron’s setting of Franz Biebl’s “Ave Maria.” Other works on the program include “Military Symphony in F” by Francois Joseph Gossec; “Canterbury Chorale” by Jan Van der Roost; and the powerful “Russian Christmas Music” by Alfred Reed.
Admission to this performance is free, with a freewill offering received to benefit music scholarships at Dordt College. More than 300 U.S. and international students participate in the music program at Dordt, with opportunities to perform in four choral groups, two orchestras, and three bands. Music scholarships are available to qualified students.
