Dordt Blades Host Clash In the Corn This Weekend

November 19, 2008

The Event… The four teams participating in this year’s Clash in the Corn November 20-22 are vying for the “COB CUP”. The “Cob Cup” will be awarded to the tournament champion and the team’s name will be engraved on the award which will stay in Sioux Center, IA after it has been presented. The top two teams will receive trophies to take home. The first recipient of the “Cob Cup” was the University of Northern Colorado(now a D2 school) which took the prize in 2007. All the games are played at the Vernon Arena in the All Seasons Center adjacent to the Dordt College campus in Sioux Center.

All games will be played until a winner is determined. In the event of a tie, a 5 minute overtime will be played and if necessary a 3 man shoot-out will follow and a sudden death shoot-out as the final decider. The champion will be decided by overall tournament record and in the event of a tie, head to head competition will determine the victor. If multiple teams are tied the tie will be broken by “goals against” and then “goals for”. All teams involved in the quadrangular event are members of the ACHA.

Calvin, Dordt and Wyoming all play in Division 3, while the University of Wisconsin-Platteville plays up one level in Division 2. The American Collegiate Hockey Association began as a men's collegiate hockey league in 1991, and quickly grew to a league of over 150 teams in three men's divisions. The Women's Division 2 was added in 2006, and the ACHA currently boasts five divisions with over 375 teams from across the nation.

The winner of the tournament is decided by which team has the best record over the 3 games. In the event of a tie the winner will be decided by head to head competition.
