Prairie Grass Film Challenge winners

The second annual Prairie Grass Film Challenge attracted 10 student film teams this year, with the resulting movies screened and judged for prizes Friday, Nov. 9, at Dordt College’s B.J. Haan Auditorium.
“Best of Show” ($500 cash prize, Avid software worth $1,700 and the “Dordty” Award) was awarded to PJ Films, a group from the University of Iowa. Their film, “The Bear,” was created by Joseph Clarke (team leader), Patrick Bottaro, Derek Renfeld, Alex Solsma, Andrew Warack, and Eric Adams.

First runner up ($250 plus Avid software) was awarded to Duck, Duck Goose! Productions, a Dordt College group. Their film, “Stand-Up Twins” was created by Elliot De Wit (team leader) David De Wit, Ben Christians, Andrew Voss, and Kenny Gradert.

The Peoples’ Choice Award ($150 and Avid software) was awarded to Ceiling Dragon Productions, a Dordt College group, based on voting submitted on the Film Challenge website.

The films in the competition were created September 20-22, with teams getting just 48 hours to come up with a concept for a 5-8 minute short film, write a script, shoot the footage, edit the footage, and submit it for screening.

Ceiling Dragon Productions, Dordt College: “Tainted Memory,” by Piper Kucera (team leader), Joel Veldkamp, Nathan Gorter, Ben Slager, Zach McCoy, and Isaiah Hoegh;
Cyn derBlok, Unity Christian and Dordt College: “Lonely Talk” by Alvin Shim (team leader), Jacob Kroeze, Lauren Boersma, and Mia Kornelis;
DC Watch, Dordt College: “The Remnant” by Jess Brauning (team leader), Mason Welsh, Nate Nykamp, Jon Nederhoff, Matt Sieperda, Katie Waymire, Rachel Engle, and Evan Gulstine;
Moonlight Productions, Dordt College: “Time Spin,” by Vern Eekhoff (team leader), Philip Van Maanen, Dale Vande Griend, Joelle Riezebos, Helia De Hoop, Brett Cooper, Morgan Attema, and Garry Riezebos;
Ruble & Schnepel Productions, Morningside and Briar Cliff Colleges: “The Chemical Club,” by Jordan Hunter (team leader), Brian Schnepel, Katherine Holtzmann, Matt Chicoine, Jennifer Ernesti, Rebecca Hartmann, Michelle Heeren, and April Zingler;
The Dead Pants Society, Dordt College: “Prelude” by Justin Besteman (team leader), Robert Minto, Nick Sohre, Peter Hamstra, Jon Van Nieuwenhuyzen, Austin Boon, Andrea Marcus, Jessica Drenten, and Jenna Brouwer;
The Dutch Touch, Dordt College: “Assembled Persona,” by Peter Hessels (team leader), Eric Meeter, Jesse Walhof, Mark Bylenga, Lisa Veurink, Jenna Veenbaas, Dan Fynaardt, and Paul Robinson;
