Prairie Grass Film Challenge

Why just post movies on YouTube when you can win $500 for your work?

Area students are invited to participate in the second annual Prairie Grass Film Challenge, using just one weekend (Sept. 20-22) to make a movie at the location of your choice. Screening, judging, and movie awards will take place Friday, Nov. 9, in the B.J. Haan Auditorium at Dordt College, the home base for Prairie Grass Productions.

The sign-up deadline for the Prairie Grass Film Challenge is Wednesday, Sept. 19.

In just 48 hours, participating teams will produce a 5-8 minute movie.

On September 20, teams will receive an email, assigning them four elements (genre, a prop, a line of dialogue, and a character). Teams must then write a script, shoot the footage, cut it together, and submit it for screening.
The film-making team that takes Best of Show will win $500, the coveted Dordty Award, and that team’s school will win an AVID film and video editing software package valued at $1,700. The runner up award is $250, plus an Avid software package for their school. A People’s Choice Award of $150 (plus Avid software for school) will be awarded based on votes by viewers on screening night and on the internet. Other awards will be offered in a variety of categories to be determined, such as best of genre, editing, musical score and more.

To enter this year’s event, register via the website and submit the $35 entrance fee to Dordt College’s PGP Film Challenge. You can also print out the forms and mail them to PG Film Challenge, 498 Fourth Ave NE, Sioux Center, IA 51250. Entries must be postmarked or submitted in Dordt campus mail by Sept. 19. Teams must deliver their film on miniDV tape or DVD to the Dordt College Campus Center by 9 p.m. (CST) on Saturday, September 22. Drop-off centers will also be established for teams that are too far to make the drop on Dordt’s campus.
