Dordt artwork selected for publication

April 4, 2007

Two Dordt College art students have had work selected for inclusion in an art volume to be printed soon.

Joe Van Walbeek, a junior graphic design major from Blue Grass, IA; and Shawn Voss, a fine arts studio major from Holland, MI, had their art selected for inclusion in the book, “Mail Art Project 31.12.06/Immigration.”
The collaborative art project received 231 entries from 26 countries over a six month period, with 100 chosen for publication.

Ten students from the Painting I class taught by Susan Van Geest submitted work to the juried exhibit. The assignment was to collaborate on a mail art (postcard-size) piece that would stimulate artistic personal process, introduce new ideas/images from another artist, and result in royalty free art that could be shared with others.

The art book will include a full page reproduction of the 100 selected works, along with a description of the work, the name of artist, and artist details (in three languages). Each artist with work in the volume will receive a complimentary copy.

Van Walbeek’s winning submission was an acrylic titled, “The All Watching Eye.” He collaborated with Leah Wolthuizen on the painting. Voss’ piece was untitled.

Entries in the project were judged by Sophie Blachet, director of Art Vitam; and Valeria Pouza, an independent curator.
