Kempers and Gerdes Place at National Cross Country Meet

Jen Kempers and Chelsea Gerdes, a junior and senior respectively at Dordt College, ran at the NAIA National Cross Country meet on Saturday, November 18 in Lousville, Kentucky.

Kempers, a Sioux Center native, finished 34th overall, narrowly missing All-American honors with a time of 18:46 over the 5,000 meter course. The top-30 runners in the race are declared All-Americans. The 30th place runner finished the race in a time of 18:40.

Gerdes finished 116th overall in a time of 19:41. It was the second straight year that Gerdes qualified for the National Meet. This year's qualification came after a season in which Gerdes was plagued by an injury suffered in the second race of the season. 268 runners participated in the women's race.

Genevieve Binsfield of Minot State was the individual champion with a time of 17:38.

Virginia Intermont ran away from the competition in the men's race with a total of 67 points, easily outdistancing themselves from Concordia (California) with 136 points. The women's team race was won by Simon Fraser (British Columbia) with a total of 73 points. Cedarville (Ohio) was the nearest competitor with 92.
