Kooima Awarded National Honor
October 19, 2006(Thursday, October 19; Sioux Center, Iowa) Traci Kooima, a Dordt College senior from Rock Valley, Iowa, has been named the NAIA national-libero-of-the-week for matches played the week of October 9-14. Earlier in the week Kooima took GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports and NAIA Region III libero-of-the-week honors as she anchored the Dordt defense in three critical wins.
The defensive specialist averaged 8.9 digs per game and handled 86 out of 88 serves cleanly in Dordt’s wins over Wayne State (NCAA II—rated 24th at the time), Morningside and Briar Cliff. The wins over Morningside and Briar Cliff avenged early season losses to the Sioux City schools.
Kooima has been a regular in the Dordt lineup since her freshman season, playing in 153 of a possible 159 matches, piling up 2193 career digs for a 4.2 per game average. Kooima has also accumulated 155 ace serves during her career. The Defenders have a 135-24 record in Kooima’s three-plus years in the program.
Kooima and Lindsey Van Wyk (Grinnell, Iowa) are the lone seniors on a Dordt College team that is currently sixth in the NAIA Region III ratings and stand fifth in the Great Plains Athletic Conference with five matches to go in the conference schedule. Dordt hosts nationally rated Doane and Nebraska Wesleyan this weekend at home in Dordt’s annual Parent’s Weekend. The Defenders take a 21-9 record into the match and are 7-4 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.
