Schaap book receives Christianity Today Award
May 30, 2006
James Calvin Schaap’s book, Startling Joy: Seven Magical Stories of Christmas, was presented an Award of Merit in Christianity Today’s 2006 book awards, featured in the magazine’s June issue.
Two hundred forty books were nominated for this year’s competition, from which judges at Christianity Today selected a best book and a runner-up in 10 categories. The 22 books selected for awards this year meet the Christianity Today’s criteria of “bringing understanding to people, events, and ideas that shape evangelical life, thought, and mission.”
Schaap’s book received the Award of Merit in the fiction category. The top book in that category was This Heavy Silence by author Nicole Mazzarella. Schaap also received an Award of Merit in 2004 with a previous book, Touches the Sky.
An English professor at Dordt College, Schaap has authored more than 20 books, including the novels, Touches the Sky, Romey’s Place, The Secrets of Barneveld Calvary, Home Free and In the Silence There are Ghosts.
Schaap’s next book, Crossing Over: Stories of Asian Refugee Christians, will be released this summer. He also has several other book projects in the works, including another Christmas book; the chronicle of a woman’s struggle with ovarian cancer; and a novel, Testimony.
Startling Joy: Seven Magical Stories of Christmas, is available at the Dordt College Bookstore and at other book retail outlets.
