Summit Chamber Players to perform April 7

March 28, 2005

The Summit Chamber Players will perform Thursday, April 7, 7:30 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium on the campus of Dordt College, Sioux Center.

The group will feature a recently rediscovered piece by the German composer Felix Draeseke (1835-1913) created specifically for instruments made by Alfred Stelzner (1852-1906).

The ensemble will also present a sextet by Arnold Krug (1849-1904), also made for Stelzner’s instruments. Stelzner’s two instrumental creations, the violotta and the cellone, bridge the space between other stringed instruments and are on loan from collector Jim Christensen. The violetta falls into the gap of the viola and the cello, while the cellone is between the cello and the base. Summit Players

These unique instruments were products of Stelzner’s studies of mathematics and physics, along with his abilities as a cello player and instrument maker. Stelzner also redesigned the instruments in the violin family, and they are featured in this concert as well.

All of the Summit Chamber Players are University of Wyoming faculty members, with the exception of John Thomson. The Wyoming Alliance for Arts sponsors the Players, which is supported by the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network and the Wyoming Arts Council through funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Wyoming State Legislature.
