‘Northwest Iowa Farmers’ on display at Campus Center Art Gallery
September 29, 2004
The photography of Tom Becker, Orange City, will be exhibited at the Dordt College Campus Center Art Gallery October 1-31, with a public reception Tuesday, Oct. 12, 6:30 to 8 p.m., and remarks by Becker at 7 p.m.
“Northwest Iowa Farmers” is the subject of the show, which includes 25 portraits of farmers who represent eight counties in Northwest Iowa, along with 15 vignettes that show a farmer’s working environment. The farmers in each portrait wrote short statements about themselves or their farming operation that will be displayed along with the photographs.
Becker said “Northwest Iowa Farmers” is intended to honor the American farmer by depicting through portraiture the diversity of people in this profession, the variety of lifestyles this profession holds, and through the statements, the passion these people have for their profession. “It is their life’s work, and often times their legacy to pass on to future generations,” remarked Becker.
“The tough part of this exhibit was getting agreement from these people to participate,” said Becker. “I am really grateful to all the Northwest Iowa farmers that were willing to participate in this exhibit and sincerely hope they enjoyed the experience. These people are important to our American life and I think they should be recognized for what they do and what they represent.”
Becker began the farmer project in June, 2002, and continues to add to the collection. It was made possible in part by an Iowa Arts Council Grant.
Becker earned a B.S. degree from the University of South Dakota and has been selected to do exhibitions or show collections at galleries in Ames, Britt, Cherokee, Council Bluffs, Decorah, Okoboji, Orange City and Sioux City, Iowa; Omaha and Wayne, Neb.; Bloomington, Minn.; and Seattle, Wash.
He was also selected to participate in a Midwest Photography Project with the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, Ill., and has been a photography contributor to The Sun Magazine. Becker was awarded Artist Project Grants from the Iowa Arts Council in l995, 2000 and 2002.
The public is invited to see this free exhibition at the Dordt College Campus Center Art Gallery, open every day from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
