Convocation begins Dordt College Jubilee Year

August 19, 2004

Dordt College will embark upon the new 2004-2005 academic year with a convocation ceremony on the first day of classes, August 26.

Convocations are a formal bringing together of the academic community to re-examine the learning institution’s vision and connection to a variety of disciplines and callings.

The first convocation for Dordt College’s fiftieth anniversary “Jubilee” year will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. Speaking at the convocation will be Dr. Carl E. Zylstra, president of Dordt College. Dr. Zylstra will speak on the topic, “A Distinctive College with a Distinguished Future.”

Dr. Zylstra is the third president of Dordt College, appointed to that position in October of 1996. Prior to the college presidency he was the pastor of two Christian Reformed congregations and also taught at Calvin Seminary. Dr. Zylstra earned his master of divinity degree from Calvin Theological Seminary and received a Ph.D. in practical theology from Princeton Theological Seminary.

Dr. Zylstra also hosts a weekly radio talk program, “Conversations” Friday mornings on KDCR radio station, discussing topics of contemporary interest with invited guests.

This year Dordt College will conduct monthly Jubilee convocations, featuring a series of alumni and guest speakers. The public is invited to attend these events.
