Ag Scholarships

Six Dordt College students were awarded First National Bank Agriculture Scholarships at an awards luncheon held Friday, April 16, at Dordt College.

First National Bank awarded the scholarships in observance of both the 100th anniversary of the bank and the 25th anniversary of the Dordt College Agriculture Department.

“First National has traditionally been an agriculture bank, so when we saw that Dordt College’s Agriculture department was celebrating its 25th anniversary on the same year that we are celebrating our 100th anniversary, we decided to do something to recognize both milestones,” said Kevin Wolterstorff, bank president.

David Vander Werf, director of planned giving at Dordt College, expressed appreciation for First National Bank’s gift, which will assist six students in earning their Bachelor of Arts degrees in agriculture. Nationally, there are very few Christian liberal-arts colleges that offer a complete agriculture program, challenging students to view important issues in agriculture from a Christian point of view.

Ag majors named to receive the scholarships for the upcoming 2004-2005 academic year were Brett Guthmiller, Menno, S.D.; Dan Hanson, Papillion, Neb.; Daniel Hummel, Coallhurst, Alberta, Canada; Jared Brouwer, Prinsburg, Minn.; and Kerry Vermeer, Maurice, Iowa; and Torray Wilson from Paullina, Iowa. Recipients are all currently students who intend to major in the field of agriculture.
