Tayler Hoekstra

Instructor of Engineering & Physics

Tayler Hoekstra serves as serves as instructor of engineering and physics at Dordt University.

“I have always been fascinated by the way our Creator formed our bodies to function the way that they do, both macroscopically and microscopically,” says Hoekstra. “I enjoy continuing to investigate and help others understand the way that God intended for our bodies to function and even delving into the complexity of what we often consider to be simple motions (i.e. walking).”

With a background in biomedical device development, Hoekstra continues to explore biomechanics methods, specifically as they relate to motion capture and developing models of the human body. “My current research is aimed at utilizing better mechanical models of the foot to help researchers understand compensatory motions within the foot during uneven terrain gait,” explains Hoekstra.

Outside the classroom, Hoekstra enjoys engaging with students and the community. He assists with Dordt’s annual STEAMFest, guiding kids in building simple prosthetics from household materials to spark interest in biomedical design. He also leads a campus Bible study, finding joy in growing alongside students in their faith.

In his free time, Hoekstra enjoys music, swimming as a form of exercise and play, reading, and playing board and card games.
