Dr. Carl Fictorie

Professor of Chemistry

Dr. Carl Fictorie serves as professor of chemistry at Dordt University, teaching courses such as Principles of Chemistry, Chemical Analysis, Perspectives in Physical Science, and Environmental Chemistry.

His research interests include catalysis in biodiesel production, energy and the environment, and the philosophy of chemistry, with particular interest in epistemology and the relation of chemistry and the visual arts.

Fictorie finds inspiration in a passion for lifelong learning and reflection. Echoing Abraham Kuyper’s vision for Christian scholarship, he seeks the courage, perseverance, and energy "to go back to his own principles in his thinking, to renew all scientific investigation on the lines of these principles, and to glut the press with the burden of his cogent studies."

As a member at the American Scientific Affiliation, an organization of Christians in the sciences, Fictorie is devoted to exploring the intersection of faith and science. Fictorie has explored this topic in a variety of articles on the In All Things blog and Pro Rege.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Fictorie also serves on the Academic Senate and the committee that revised The Educational Task and Framework of Dordt University.

Education:

  • Ph.D. in Materials Chemistry, University of Minnesota, 1997
  • B.A. in Chemistry and Physics, Dordt University, 1990
