Nursing educator accepts faculty role at Dordt University

With experience in clinical nursing, staff education, and college instruction, Nicole Driewer brings a well-rounded perspective to her new role as instructor of nursing at Dordt University.

Nicole Driewer has accepted a position as instructor of nursing at Dordt University.

Driewer earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska and a master’s in nursing education from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. “My nursing background includes step-down and medical-surgical units, staff education, and adjunct instructor for a community college in St. Louis,” Driewer says. Most recently, she served as an assistant professor of nursing at Methodist College in Omaha, Nebraska.

Motivated by her own experiences in the nursing profession, Driewer is committed to equipping new nurses with ongoing support as they acclimate to their roles. Reflecting on her orientation experiences as a new nurse, she says, “I was reminded of the importance of support, mentorship, and relationship. That has shaped my nursing and teaching practices to focus on relationships.”

“I recognized a need for nurses who could come alongside new graduate nurses and help them grow in their role,” explains Driewer. “I became a nurse educator on the floor, where I helped teach and develop the program for orienting and acclimating new nurses.”

Between roles, Driewer stayed at home raising her four daughters with her husband, Dr. Joe Driewer. However, teaching was never fully removed from her life. “Over the years, the Lord has continued to instill in me a desire to teach—whether that is patients, nurses, other staff, Sunday school and youth group students, or our daughters,” she says. “I have also taught in women’s Bible studies and quilting classes.”

Eager to return to her nursing calling, Driewer began working at Sioux Center Health in October 2024 after her husband accepted a position in Dordt’s Engineering department. She was then hired as the simulation technician in Dordt’s nursing department. “The Lord convinced me that this would be a good place to both grow as an educator and use teaching gifts to benefit others,” she explains. “Plus, the nursing group is just a joy to be a part of.”

Deb Bomgaars, chair of the nursing department at Dordt, believes Driewer’s breadth of nursing experience will be a tremendous asset to the program. “Not only does she have a wide variety of experience in nursing and in nursing education, but she is also flexible and knowledgeable about nursing education and willing to teach wherever she is needed.”

“I am honored and blessed to start working full-time in the nursing department,” Driewer adds. “They have welcomed me wholeheartedly, and I am excited to continue guiding the next generation of young nurses.”

“Driewer understands and lives out the mission of Dordt University,” adds Bomgaar. “She not only fits into the nursing department, but she also belongs at Dordt.”
