Dordt University will offer the Baltimore Urban Studies program in Baltimore, Maryland to undergraduate students, who are encouraged to apply for the spring 2024 term.

Baltimore Urban Studies is an experiential learning program designed to teach, mentor, and train Christian college students in spiritual formation, public health, and social work. The program is open to all majors such as public health, social work, business, communication, criminal justice, and more. While living in a unique urban learning community, students will enroll in 12 to 18 credits of undergraduate courses, complete an internship for credit, and participate in cross-cultural field learning experiences in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and New York City.

“Baltimore Urban Studies offers a strong line-up of staff and faculty, course offerings, and internship opportunities for public health, social work, and interdisciplinary majors,” says David Lee, global studies program specialist at Dordt. “One of the largest merits is the extensive network of partnerships the program has with churches, clinics, hospitals, agencies, and other organizations in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. I am excited to see our public health and social work majors take full advantage of this program.”

The program provides students with an opportunity to learn about urban America and see the United States and the world through different perspectives, adds Lee. This will encourage students to expand their worldview, appreciate God’s creation from a wider lens, and gain understanding of a new context.

Living and Learning International, the parent organization of Baltimore Urban Studies, works with more than 40 Christian colleges and universities including Wheaton College, Biola University, and Messiah University. The program is offered in the fall and spring, and Dordt students may begin applying for the spring 2024 term and beyond.

“It’s exciting that students will be challenged and stretched in different ways in a metropolitan area with a population of more than 2 million people,” adds Lee. “I want our students to learn, absorb, and strengthen their worldviews through this unique experience.”
