Dordt University’s Music Department will embark on its annual hymn festival tour from November 14-16, presenting “Singing the Solas: A Reformation Hymn Festival.” The festival will feature hymns centered on the five Solas that emerged from the Reformation and the key scriptural beliefs that continue to shape churches within the Reformed tradition.
The tour will include performances at Redeemer URC in St. John, Indiana and 14th Street CRC in Holland, Michigan. Seventeen student musicians will participate in the tour, including a brass quintet, choral octet, organists, a pianist, percussionist, cellist and flutist. The group will also participate in Sunday morning worship at Redeemer URC.
According to Joan Ringerwole Chair of Church Music and Organ Dr. Carrie Groenewold, the tour provides students with meaningful experience in church worship. “The Hymn Festival gives our students an active role in leading a traditional service of worship,” she says. “Church music students also helped design the Hymn Festival, giving them practical experience in creative worship planning.”
“It is our prayer that these Hymn Festivals will bring glory to God, offer a corporate ministry of music to communities and constituents, and promote our mission at Dordt University,” Groenewold adds.
