Dordt Music Department to Host Ensemble Concerts

Dordt Music Department will host upcoming ensemble concerts

Dordt University’s Music Department will be hosting a Choral Ensembles Concert on Friday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m. and a Campus Band and Chamber Orchestra concert on Saturday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. Due to Covid-19 both concerts are not open for the public to attend in-person unless a musician has provided a ticket, but will be available via live streaming at vimeo.com/event/572686.

The Choral Ensembles Concert will include performances by Bella Voce (women’s chorus), Canons of Dordt (men’s chorus), Chorale (85-voice mixed choir), and Concert Choir (53-voice advanced mixed choir). The repertoire will focus on themes of worship, music’s beauty, and moving from darkness to light. The music draws from a wide range of styles from the Renaissance to new works. Also featured will be the Midwest premiere of John Muehleisen’s “Kyrie Angustiis” (Kyrie for Troubled Times). Joining the choirs will be several instrumental collaborators including piano, a string quartet featuring Dordt string faculty, and guitar. Bella Voce is conducted by Dr. Carrie Groenewold; all other ensembles are conducted by Ryan Smit.

The Dordt University Campus Band and Chamber Orchestra concert will present performances featuring music by Bob Margolis, Michael Colgrass, Gustav Holst, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and others. Undergraduate guest conductor Claira De Jong will take the stage in her instrumental conducting debut with the Campus Band to conduct Hugh Stuart’s “Three Ayers from Gloucester.” The ensembles are under the direction of Dr. Onsby C. Rose.

Only those who have received a ticket from a musician may attend these concerts in person. Masks are required for those attending and seating groups will be socially distanced. Dordt University continues to monitor how Covid-19 affects our campus and community. Please visit dordt.edu/updates on the day of the event to see if there are any restrictions or cancellations.
