Current Students Encouraged to Apply for Large Scholarship

Dordt University is pleased to announce the Lambertus Verburg Prize for Excellence in Kuyperian Scholarship, one of the largest scholarships that has been made available to Dordt students. The first-place recipient will receive a $15,000 one-year scholarship, and the second-place recipient will receive a $10,000 one-year scholarship. To apply for the scholarship, students who are in their sophomore through senior year must submit a 3,500-word scholarly essay that engages with theologian Abraham Kuyper as a primary source and identifies a contemporary issue.

“A crucial goal at Dordt that animates why we have programs like the Kuyper Honors Program is our goal to engage deeply with our Kuyperian roots and pursue the calling of Christian scholarship,” says Donald Roth, professor of criminal justice and co-director of the Kuyper Honors Program. “This scholarship prize is an eye-popping incentive that aligns with that goal. I’m eager to see our students dig into our foundational vision and carry it forward through their work in pursuit of this scholarship prize.”

Dr. Abby Foreman, professor of social work and co-director of the Kuyper Honors Program, and Roth are available to help students through the research and writing process. Students do not need to be part of the Kuyper Honors Program to apply for the scholarship.

The scholarship, adds Roth, is all about motivating students to really take hold of the heart of our institution.

“It encourages students to make the most of what they have available once they’re already here, and I think that’s a really important complement to the overall financial aid program we have at Dordt,” he says.

The Lambertus Verburg Prize for Excellence in Kuyperian Scholarship is funded by an estate gift from Rimmer and Ruth de Vries, in memory of Rimmer's great-grandfather, who settled in Sioux Center, Iowa, in the 1890s.
