Dordt University Gaming Guild

Are you ready to level up?

At Dordt, we strive to be leaders in every area of academics—even gaming. It’s what led to the founding of the Gaming Guild right here on campus. The Gaming Guild has three main objectives:

  • To connect and build community
  • To provide education opportunities
  • To provide leadership opportunities

From video games to tabletop role-playing games to board games, we believe students who are passionate about gaming should have opportunities to explore the link between faith and gaming.

The Gaming Guild provides a community for gamers who are also committed followers of Jesus. The goal is to help gamers connect with each other, think more broadly about their calling as gamers, and develop their own gaming-related gifts to serve God’s kingdom.

What’s the Gaming Guild all about?

If there’s one thing gamers know, it’s that gaming can create close-knit friendships. Whether you meet every week for an epic Dungeons and Dragons campaign or you jump online to play Minecraft or Valorant with friends from all over the world, gaming builds community in unique and meaningful ways.

We want gamers to have a place to thrive and enjoy the unique interests and talents that God has given them. We call that place the Bunker, a gamer’s paradise that includes:

  • Five top-of-the-line pro-gaming computer stations
  • A Playstation 5 console
  • A Nintendo Switch console
  • A massive selection of board games
  • Collaborative spaces for tabletop role-playing adventures

We know students want community through gaming, to have meaningful events, and to talk about faith and gaming with others. For those students who enjoy connecting in-person, the Bunker is the place to be.

Despite the name, the Gaming Guild does more than just game. An educational aspect is essential. We believe students should reflect upon the broader world of gaming, evaluate it from a Christian perspective, and live out a biblical perspective as disciples of Christ in whatever gaming-related capacity they might find themselves.

This deeper exploration can be found in courses like Dr. Hickey’s Engaging the World of Gaming theology class as well as lectures focused on topics like:

  • The relationship between gaming and climate chare
  • Gaming as a tool for those with disabilities
  • How video games can foster meaningful relationships
  • And more

You won’t just play games in the Gaming Guild. You’ll learn how God can use them—and you—for His glory and purposes. Besides, classes are important. How else are you supposed to gain XP and level up if you aren’t focusing on your studies?

The Gaming Guild also provides opportunities for leadership. Each chapter of the Guild—console gaming, roleplaying, PC gaming, traditional gaming, and Minecraft—has a vice president who plans events for each of their respective areas.

Members are also pushed to try new games and, in some cases, research, develop, and plan intricate stories for tabletop roleplaying games.

In the end, the Gaming Guild challenges students to reflect on the broader world of gaming, evaluate it from a Christian perspective, and live out a biblical perspective as disciples of Christ in whatever gaming-related capacity they might find themselves.

The Gaming Guild is also creating a leadership council for industry experts, including VIPs at board game and video game companies.

When it’s all said and done, you don’t want to be an NPC in your own game—you want to be a leader. Dordt can help you prepare for that future in leadership.
