COOL THINGS I DID AT DORDT

I spent my first three years at Dordt running track and cross country. This was the most rewarding experience I had at Dordt, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. The friends I made during that first week of training camp are still my closest friends today, and the coaches have been great mentors for me. I also had the opportunity to be a part of two great clubs while at Dordt; the F.L.A.M.E. club gave me practical experience operating a business that did around $80,000 in sales a year, and Defender Capital Management allowed me to get hands-on investment experience managing a nearly $900,000 portfolio. Not many students at schools this size get to have these types of experiences.

CONCEPT THAT BLEW MY MIND

The most important thing we can do to support our faith walk is to be actively involved in a church. As Christians we are going to face trials and temptations every day, and the best way to get through them is through prayer, reading the Word of God, and supporting each other in Christ. God gave us a wonderful gift of community in the church, and we are not meant to do this life alone. Surrounding ourselves with a body of believers is an incredibly rewarding experience.

OBSTACLES I’VE OVERCOME

One of my best friends passed away in a car accident the summer after my sophomore year. It was a very difficult time for me, and I spent a lot of time questioning why this had to happen. The community at Dordt really shined through during this challenging time; I had people I barely knew reaching out to me and asking if I needed anything, and it was apparent that everyone on campus was mourning with those of us who were closest to him. I am incredibly thankful for the love and support the Dordt community provided me in that difficult time. I wouldn't wish that experience on anyone, but my faith grew through it, and I learned to trust in God's plan no matter how difficult it may seem.

HOW DORDT IMPACTED ME

When I first arrived at Dordt, I was an incredibly independent person; I didn't like relying on other people, and I thought I could do everything on my own. The friends I have made at Dordt have changed that. I have learned that being able to lean on one another is an incredible gift. My friends at Dordt have taught me to open myself up and be vulnerable; we have had many valuable conversations about our faith, and I can honestly say my faith would not be as strong today without them.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR ME

After graduation, I will be moving to Coralville, Iowa, where I will begin a job as a financial analyst at GreatAmerica Financial Services.

WHAT I WOULD TELL PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS

Your time at Dordt can be whatever you make of it. Don't be afraid to try new things and meet new people. There are tons of opportunities and events at Dordt, and they're a great chance for you to branch out and have some fun.

HOW DORDT HELPED ME DO MORE

My classes at Dordt have equipped me not only with the technical skills I need to succeed in the workplace but also with a solid foundation for my faith. I’ve learned that no matter where I am in life, God has a plan; I can't wait to see where he leads me. No matter where that is, I am confident that my education has prepared me well to serve those around me in my career and live my life as a witness for Christ.
