A Concept That Blew My Mind
I took a class about the history of the Muslim world. It blew my mind about how naive westerners are to the issues and stories behind the struggles the West has with that region. We, in America, are largely uninformed and influenced by the media, and the class has proven to be a welcomed perspective check.
Cool Things I Did At Dordt
Volleyball has been a highlight of my experience at Dordt. Being able to compete in a sport that I love at the college level has been such a tremendous opportunity too few get to say they've had. The team has traveled all over the place, from Kansas City, to Chicago, to St. Louis, and many places in-between. I've also been able to host some of the big shows that Dordt puts on like NCDC (a singing competition) and Airband (a lip syncing competition). These will be memories I reflect on fondly in years to come.
Obstacles I've Overcome
Transferring here in the middle of the year was difficult. However, with the support of my volleyball team and the community of close friends I found quickly here at Dordt, I was able to easily overcome that hurdle.
Who I Was When I Came To Dordt
I was a sophomore in college when I first came to Dordt. I had little understanding of the Reformed Christian doctrine which is the driving force behind Dordt's entire being. I was looking for a place to grow spiritually and athletically as well as be challenged academically.
How Dordt Impacted Me
My experience at Dordt has absolutely affected the person I am now. Dordt has allowed (and sometimes forced) me to critically think about what I believe about God and how that belief affects me as a Christ follower in this world. I've grown professionally, and I feel more than prepared to jump into my own classroom after graduating.
What's Next For Me
After graduating, I will travel a bit and then spend my summer working at a camp in the mountains of Montana. I will then be teaching in an elementary and middle school in Wyoming.
What I Would Tell Prospective Students
I would tell a prospective student to ask good questions about the Dordt experience. Ask coaches if you could be considered to compete on a team. Ask about internship opportunities. Ask about what there is to do around Sioux Center. Ask about the community on and off campus. Don't be afraid to ask questions so that you will be well-informed when making your decision to come here.
How Dordt Helped Me Do More
Dordt has enabled me to do more on the court and in the classroom than I ever thought I could. I've been challenged to grow in healthy ways and reach higher, challenging my peers, professors, and myself in ways I never thought I would be able to in college.
