A Concept That Blew My Mind
(Literally everything in music theory blew my mind!)
The biggest thing that blew my mind at Dordt was the vast array of beliefs represented. I thought that class discussions would be easy because everyone at Dordt came from a conservative Christian background and had been through Christian education. I was surprised to find Christians in all stages of their walk with Christ and from a variety of denominations finding their place at Dordt. This definitely challenged me because I actually had to acknowledge and check my assumptions and beliefs for the first time.
Cool Things I Did At Dordt
Music was my life at Dordt, and because of music, I was given so many amazing opportunities. I went on chapel tour with our chapel team, went on multiple choir tours including one in the Netherlands, and performed my own hour-long vocal recital. (The weirdest thing I ever did at Dordt was butcher a chicken for Foods class!)
Obstacles I've Overcome
One of the toughest obstacles I overcame was moving away after graduating. I got a job in Kansas City, away from my family and friends. The move was one of the best things my husband and I have done because it made us grow and apply what we’d learned at Dordt while stepping out on our own into the “real world.”
Who I Was When I Came To Dordt
I was just really excited to meet new people and to follow a path of study that was fit for me. Dordt is close to home for me so I didn’t have to worry too much about getting homesick - I actually did a pretty good job of distancing myself appropriately so that I could figure things out on my own.
How Dordt Impacted Me
My husband and I are very thoughtful in the way we make big decisions, and I think we learned that from Dordt. At Dordt I was exposed to people with different theological views in a variety of subjects, and that completely changed my lens. I am a more empathetic, understanding and compassionate person because of Dordt.
I teach music now at Kansas City Christian School in Prairie Village, KS. I am now in my fourth year of teaching there and enjoy the opportunities that I’ve had. It is a K-12 school, so I get to teach kids of all ages!
What I Would Tell Prospective Students
I chose Dordt because of its excellent music and education programs, but I ended up getting so much more than excellence. Dordt gave me perspective, community, growth, and a clearer vision of who God made me to be. At Dordt, you’ll get so much more than an education, with the guidance of professors and peers who love the Lord.
How Dordt Helped Me Do More
Because of my training at Dordt, I was much more ready for the challenges of my job. I also gained perspective on how to relate to kids and their experiences with the love of Christ. I would say that Dordt prepared me very well for a real-world teaching job.
