As Christians, we are called to be informed and active citizens who exercise this role faithfully. In light of this, Dordt University encourages opportunities for candidates running for political office to visit the campus. Appearance of a candidate for public office on campus may be for an educational purpose or as an independent campaign event.

All appearances must be coordinated by the Events Office in consultation with the Administrative Cabinet. Dordt University reserves the right to refuse unsolicited requests for appearance at the college.

Dordt University invites every presidential candidate in good standing with their political party (be it Republican, Independent, or Democrat) equal access to our campus. This allows us to fulfill our mission of “equipping students, alumni, and the broader community to work effectively for Christ-centered renewal in all aspects of contemporary life.” Dordt maintains a neutral stance on political candidates and issues, as not doing so would violate our status as a nonprofit institution.

Since Dordt University maintains a neutral stance on political candidates and issues, all activity by students, faculty, and staff should avoid being attributed to the college itself. No resources of the college should be used in connection with individual political activity. The Dordt University name and insignia may not appear on any material used or intended for support of a particular candidate. Funds or contributions for political candidates or campaigns may not under any circumstances be solicited in the name of Dordt University. If Dordt students, faculty, or staff make political contributions, they must do so as individuals and not on behalf of Dordt University.

For presidential campaigns, individuals or groups may, independently, reserve facilities from the university for political campaign activities. Facilities are equally available to all candidates and political groups. Three venues are available free of charge to candidates and political groups:

  • De Yager Student Activity Center: Located on the bottom level of the Campus Center next to the Defender Grille, the De Yager Student Activity Center holds approximately 300 attendees.
  • SB 1606: Located in the Science and Technology Center, this stadium seating lecture hall holds approximately 200 attendees.
  • Eckardt Lounge: Located in the Campus Center, the Eckardt Lounge holds approximately 100 attendees.

Dordt University will provide a stage, microphone setup, and access to a sound engineer for the event.

If a candidate / political group chooses to reserve a space at Dordt, they must agree to have the candidate answer three questions from Dordt University students during the Q&A portion of the candidate’s presentation.

Dordt University recognizes the importance of campus and public advertising of sanctioned events and activities in fostering an active and involved college community. At the same time, the university recognizes that an attractive and well-maintained physical campus environment is essential to the overall advancement of the university.

Therefore, Dordt University prohibits political signage from being attached to trees, light standards, buildings, or otherwise affixed to college property. Signage erected upon the grounds will be allowed along the walkways and in front of the facility where the event is taking place. Signage along the roadways is limited to sandwich boards owned by the university. Dordt University will also permit political displays and pamphlet distribution within the area of the event during the day of a scheduled event. All flyers advertising an upcoming political event must be pre-approved and bear the official “Student Services Approved” stamp before being displayed.

News releases announcing a political candidate’s appearance on campus are also allowed and encouraged, but they must include wording that makes it clear that Dordt University is not supporting or endorsing any candidate or elected official.

To hold a political event on the campus of Dordt University, those involved must provide a signature acknowledging that they have read through the “policy on political activities” and understand that they must abide by the rules outlined in it.

By signing below, I acknowledge that I have fully read this policy and understand that I must abide by the rules outlined here.

Dordt provides the perfect environment in which to unwind after a busy day. Our guests can work out in our state-of-the-art weight room located in the Rec Center, take a swim in the Olympic-size lap pool in the All Seasons Center, be inspired by our modern artwork displayed in the Campus Center, or simply rest in the shade of a tree in one of several landscaped areas or in Open Space Park, located adjacent to the college.

We invite you to enjoy the grounds of Dordt University or take advantage of the many recreational opportunities located in the city of Sioux Center. Two parks contain playground equipment, shelter houses, and paved volleyball courts. The Ridge Golf Club, which opened in 2009, offers an 18-hole course designed on a scenic location. The bike trail takes you on a 2.9-mile trail across town where it then joins the Sandy Hollow Trail. You can bike, walk, jog, or rollerblade along this beautiful paved system.

The Recreation Center includes two weight rooms, a large fitness room, three regulation racquetball courts, an indoor track, classrooms, a long jump pit, and a variety of other excellent facilities. All conference visitors are welcome to use our Rec Center for a variety of fitness and fun activities. The exercise/fitness room has multiple treadmills, step machines, and stationary bikes for aerobic workouts.
